My mother comes to me in Far Rockaway for Shabbos weekly from Brooklyn. A car service is very expensive. It is usually 80 dollars or more. So she travels with “access-a-ride”, but it only could be booked a day ahead of the ride, and if you forget, you cannot get the trip. For Sunday, going back home I need to schedule on Friday, as the office closes at 5 pm, and it is still Shabbos. NYC guidelines. No fighting city hall rules.
This past Friday, when I needed to schedule the return trip for Sunday, like all the years that I schedule the trips for her, I made an error and scheduled the pickup return trip on Shabbos (see the schedule).
Request Depart approximately 01:45 PM on 12/22/2018
The driver showed up and knocked on our door while we were eating the Shabbos meal. I told him it needs to be tomorrow, on Sunday. He replied, “Lady, it is your mistake” and he cannot help me. I called Motzei Shabbos the after-hour line, the operator listened and said a supervisor will review and I should call back in an hour. I said, “Thank You Heiliger Bashefer for all the times I didn’t make this mistake, and help me with this because a car service is so expensive. What is it for Hashem to sort it out?”. I said, “I will publicize the greatness of Hashem if they do give me the ride”.
I call back in an hour, she says, “Lady, we checked. MTA found you liable. The customer made the mistake, and they cannot give me the trip!”. I thanked Hashem again, and asked for a supervisor. When John Watson came on the line, I explained that we are Shabbos observant Jews and cannot call on Shabbos. I said, “If he helps my mother, I will be very thankful to him”. He listened, and told me to hold on. I waited, and he came back to tell me that he scheduled it. Wow! Thank you Hashem!
